HISTORY & MISSION

In 1970, Utah Governor Calvin L. Rampton issued an executive order establishing eight multi-county districts to deliver local public health services across the state. These districts were created to help ensure consistent, border-to-border service while supporting county and municipal partners in carrying out state and federal public health initiatives. Public health focuses on preventing disease, promoting wellness, improving sanitation, and protecting community health through education, data-driven practices, and coordinated services. The Southwest Utah Public Health Department (SWUPHD) was established in 1974 and is one of thirteen local public health departments in Utah, serving Washington, Iron, Kane, Beaver, and Garfield counties.
