MEASLES
Measles is a highly contagious disease. It spreads easily through coughing and sneezing. Measles can cause serious health complications, especially in young children under 5 years old. The best way to prevent measles is through the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine.
AM I PROTECTED?
Two doses of the MMR vaccine are recommended as the best way to protect against measles, mumps, and rubella. Children typically receive the 1st dose at 12–15 months of age and the 2nd dose at 4–6 years. The 2nd dose may be given earlier but must be at least 28 days after the 1st dose.
Before traveling outside the U.S., on domestic flights, or to areas with ongoing measles outbreaks:
Infants 6–11 months should get 1 dose of MMR vaccine before travel. These infants will need an additional 2 doses after 12 months of age (recommended at 12–15 months and 4–6 years).
Children 12 months and older should have 2 doses of MMR vaccine, at least 28 days apart.
Anyone born in 1957 or later should have proof of 2 doses of MMR vaccine or a blood test showing immunity to measles.
The MMR vaccine is safe and effective. Two doses are 97% effective against measles.
